AI search versus chatbots: when citations matter

By Editorial team ·

If you would need to defend the answer, use a tool that shows its sources.

A chatbot optimises for a fluent answer. A search engine optimises for a findable one. That difference decides which tool you should use. For anything you will publish, cite, or make a decision on, use Perplexity, Consensus or Elicit — each links back to sources you can check. For anything grounded strictly in your own documents, NotebookLM refuses to answer beyond what you gave it, which is exactly the property you want when accuracy is non-negotiable. Use general chatbots for thinking, drafting and exploring. Just do not treat a fluent paragraph as evidence.
