How to choose an AI tool without wasting a month of trials

A practical framework: start from the task, not the tool, and test with your own real work.
Most people evaluate AI tools backwards. They read a list, sign up for five products, and try each one with a toy prompt that tells them nothing.
Start from the task instead. Write down the single job you want done this week — "turn support tickets into a weekly summary", "get a first draft of release notes", "refactor this module". Then pick at most two tools that specialise in that job.
Test with real work, not demos. A tool that handles your messiest actual input is worth more than one that shines on a clean example.
Finally, check the exit cost. Can you export your data? Is there an API? Are you locking a whole team into per-seat pricing for something one person needs? The answer to those questions usually decides the winner more than raw output quality.
