The case for open-weight AI tools

By Editorial team ·

Running models yourself costs effort and buys you control, privacy and predictable pricing.

Open-weight models like Stable Diffusion, FLUX and self-hosted stacks around n8n trade convenience for three things closed products cannot offer. Control: you can fine-tune on your own data and keep behaviour stable instead of waking up to a silently updated model. Privacy: nothing leaves your infrastructure, which turns a six-week compliance conversation into a one-week one. Cost shape: you pay for hardware, not per generation. At low volume that is worse. Past a threshold it is dramatically better. The honest downside is effort. Someone has to own the pipeline. If no one on your team wants that job, pay for the hosted product.
