What GitHub Copilot does

GitHub Copilot suggests code as you type and offers chat, agents and pull-request assistance across major editors.

Our review of GitHub Copilot

Copilot is the most widely deployed AI coding tool, and its strength is that it fades into the background — completions appear in-line and you accept or ignore them. Chat and the agent mode have closed much of the gap with newer editors. If your organisation already lives on GitHub, procurement and policy controls make it the easy institutional choice, even if pure agentic tools now feel sharper.

Pros

  • Works in VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim
  • Strong enterprise controls
  • Deep GitHub and PR integration
  • Free tier for individuals

Cons

  • Completions can be generic
  • Agent mode trails specialised editors
  • Quality varies by language

Pricing

Free limited tier; Pro around $10/month; Business and Enterprise seats.

Reliable rather than exciting

Fades into the background, which is what I want. The agent mode has improved a lot but Cursor still feels sharper for big changes.
